What you will learn

  • Describe processes using werden and a past participle in the present and simple past.

The process passive with werden

The process passive foregrounds what happens. The active sentence’s accusative object becomes the subject: Der Mechaniker repariert das Auto → Das Auto wird repariert. Use finite werden and a final past participle.

The agent can be given with von plus dative: Das Auto wird von dem Mechaniker repariert. Passive and future differ: wird repariert contains a participle; wird reparieren contains an infinitive. This lesson focuses on the process rather than a state with sein.
