What you will learn
Use könnte, hätte, wäre and würde for polite requests and hypothetical situations.
Polite requests and hypothetical situations
Konjunktiv II can form polite requests: Könnten Sie mir helfen? Haben becomes hätte, sein becomes wäre and können becomes könnte. Umlauts distinguish these from the past forms hatte, war and konnte.
For many other verbs, use würde with an infinitive: Ich würde gern reisen. Forms are ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden, ihr würdet and sie/Sie würden. The infinitive goes at the end of the main clause.
For a hypothetical present condition, say Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen. This is an imagined situation, not a factual report of available time. Hätte or wäre ends the wenn clause; würde then precedes the main-clause subject.
Examples

Ich hätte gern einen Tee.

I would like a tea.
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen.
Meaning
If I had more time, I would travel.
Wenn ich an deiner Stelle wäre, würde ich warten.
Meaning
If I were in your place, I would wait.
