What you will learn

  • Compare using -er and als and express the highest degree with am …-sten.

Comparatives and superlatives

The comparative usually adds -er: klein → kleiner, schnell → schneller. Use als for unequal comparisons: Mein Fahrrad ist schneller als deins. Use so … wie for equality: so groß wie.

When no noun follows, or when used adverbially, the superlative often uses am …-sten: am schnellsten. Some adjectives need -esten, as in am ältesten. These forms are lower-case. Common adjectives may take an umlaut: groß → größer → am größten.

Learn the special forms gut → besser → am besten, viel → mehr → am meisten and gern → lieber → am liebsten. Gern expresses enjoying an activity; lieber expresses a preference: Ich lese lieber als ich fernsehe.
