What you will learn

  • Use a pronoun referring back to the subject with sich freuen, sich beeilen and other verbs.

Common reflexive verbs

A reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject: Ich beeile mich. Accusative forms are mich, dich, sich, uns, euch and sich. Formal Sie also takes lower-case sich: Beeilen Sie sich! Learn each verb with its pronoun and any required preposition.

Common examples are sich beeilen for hurrying, sich interessieren für for being interested in something, sich freuen auf for looking forward to something and sich freuen über for being pleased about something. The pronoun usually stays near the verb: Heute freue ich mich auf den Urlaub.

With waschen the pronoun may be accusative: Ich wasche mich. If a body part is the direct object, use a dative pronoun for the person: Ich wasche mir die Hände. Die Hände is the direct object and mir refers to the person whose hands they are. Here mir and dir replace mich and dich.
