What you will learn

  • Connect contrasting events with the appropriate verb order.

Contrast with obwohl and trotzdem

Obwohl gives a circumstance that suggests a different outcome: Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren. Rain does not stop the walk. Obwohl introduces a subordinate clause with the finite verb last.

Trotzdem also expresses contrast, but is an adverb in a main clause: Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren. When first, it fills position one and the verb comes second. It can also follow the verb: Wir gehen trotzdem spazieren.

Compare Ich gehe spazieren, obwohl es regnet with Es regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich spazieren. If the obwohl clause comes first, the main verb follows the comma: Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich.

Examples

Obwohl ich müde bin, lerne ich weiter.

Meaning

Although I am tired, I keep studying.

Der Bus hat Verspätung. Trotzdem komme ich pünktlich.

Meaning

The bus is late. Nevertheless, I arrive on time.

Ich habe gelernt, obwohl ich wenig Zeit hatte.

Meaning

I studied although I had little time.
