What you will learn

  • Use mit, nach, bei, seit, von, zu and aus with articles and pronouns.

Prepositions that take the dative

Mit, nach, bei, seit, von, zu and aus take the dative. Say mit dem Bus and mit mir. Movement does not change this case; these prepositions determine it.

Mit marks company or a means, bei being at someone’s place or an employer, von a point of departure, and aus origin or movement from inside. Nach often goes with cities and countries without an article; zu goes with people and many destinations. Nach Hause means homewards; zu Hause means at home.

Seit marks a period that started in the past and continues now, usually with the present: Ich lerne seit einem Jahr Deutsch. Common contractions are bei dem → beim, von dem → vom, zu dem → zum and zu der → zur.
